The first book-bound collection of Robert Huggins Photography's portraits from around the world, Captivated by the Light of the World (74 pages), has just been released in softcover and hardcover for purchase either style at Blurb.com.
Many are calling Captivated "beautiful," "breathtaking," and, appropriately, "captivating." Here's one early response:
Robert Huggins' photos are gorgeous—he captures quiet moments that speak volumes. Natural light bathes the images, and a natural, inner light seems to shine from the subjects' eyes and expressions. I especially like his layout techniques, such as layering images to deepen meaning, or juxtaposing close-up and pulled-back shots of one person. The person's expressions are slightly different in each shot, giving one a fuller sense of the subject's individuality and personality, while rendering a deeper connection of shared humanity.
Immerse yourself in the stunning diversity and beauty of our world's cultures. Showcasing many photos that have been featured on the Light blog, Captivated brings you up close and personal with some of the people who make up our beautiful and diverse world.
Captivated by the Light of the World is my attempt to describe, in a few images, the beauty of our world’s cultures. It is also an allusion to my captivation in the beauty of Jesus Christ the “Light of the world” (John 8:12), Himself the ultimate source of the tremendous diversity that bursts from every seam of Earth, and Himself the perfection of diversity when all peoples are united in worship of Him through distinct cultural expression.
People could spend their lifetimes (some do) plumbing the depths of the human capacity for creative expression, but there is simply too much. So this book, with the Light blog (roberthuggins.com/blog), are my own small contributions to our understanding of each other and our Creator.
These photos are the fruit of three journeys in 2008 and 2009 that took me through Indonesia, Cambodia, India, Ghana, and Senegal. Sensitive to people’s dignity and privacy, I asked permission of my human subjects. They were willing–and often eager–to have their portrait made.
